When we decided to update the lighting in our home, which had already become outdated (and as designers, my partner and I can’t afford that), we knew I wanted more than just functional pieces. I was looking for something that was not only aesthetically appealing, but also reflected our design philosophy. We were looking for lighting that provided warmth, texture, and a sense of craftsmanship. Therefore, we came to the conclusion that we were going to buy the next lighting pieces at Ikea.
Their collection strikes a perfect balance between form and function, with designs that highlight the beauty of natural materials. As a designer, I appreciate how Ikea approaches its products intentionally, with handmade pieces that are both affordable and sustainable.
SINNERLIG pendant lamp
The SINNERLIG It is a spectacular and certainly interesting piece. It is made with 100% natural bamboo, a sustainable and environmentally friendly wood, because its design embodies Scandinavian minimalism while adding an organic and warm touch to any space.
The fact that it is handmade makes it a unique piece, as each one of them is. The craftsmanship gives it subtle variations in texture and color that reflect the artistry behind it. What fascinates me most is how it diffuses light: the woven structure filters the lighting gently, creating subtle patterns that provide a relaxing and cozy atmosphere in the room, avoiding too harsh or direct light. We paid $69.99 for each one.
MÅNALG wall lamp
The MÅNALG It is a clear example of how Ikea fuses natural materials with contemporary design. It is made of hand-woven sedge grass, which offers an organic texture while remaining elegant and modern to fit right into the boho-chic design we were looking for.
Its compact size is ideal for providing accent lighting, and I plan to use it in areas where I want softer, more enveloping lighting, such as hallways or reading corners. Natural materials add a connection to nature, perfect for a more sustainable design approach. The price is $39.99, and we are adding a pair to our home.
BÖJA Table lamp
The BÖJA It is a table lamp with a striking but not scandalous design, and that easily fits into the concept we want to create at home. The soft curves of its bamboo base, along with its hand-woven lampshade, strike a balance between modern lines and organic materials. Again, here we have the small details of what is handmade, with the subtle differences in each of the pieces that make them unique.
The natural tones will fit perfectly with the rest of my decoration, and the warm light it projects will create a cozy atmosphere in any space. Its versatility allows me to imagine it on a nightstand, side table or even as a focal point in a more minimalist environment. For each of these, we paid $54.99. They didn’t have them in the Ikea store we went to, but they delivered them to our house in a couple of days.
KAPPELAND Pendant lamp shade
The hanging screen KAPPELAND It is a small masterpiece of craftsmanship. It is made of rattan woven entirely by hand, to find the balance between rustic and refined. Its open weave allows a soft diffusion of light, making it functional and decorative at the same time.
Val found a perfect place for it on the dining table (two fit perfectly), but we are also thinking about putting it in the entryway, where its natural texture and organic touch will set the tone for the design in the space.
